Not all of us are able to make a living off of fishing or are able to go multiple times every week. I am able to fish, usually at least once a week, but being able to take my kayak out and fish somewhere other than the neighborhood park sometimes only happens once a month! When you don't get to fish that often, having your day ruined by losing gear, especially $300 worth of rod, reel, line, and lure is not an option! One tool I use to give me peace of mind is the rod float by Savur Outdoors.
What is it?
The Savur Outdoors Rod Float is a device that replaces the butt of your rod and ejects a float when it is dropped in the water that is attached to 60 feet of braided line, allowing you to get your rod back.
How does it work?
The Savur Outdoors rod float works in much the same way an auto-inflate PFD works. Inside the piece that attaches to your rod, there is a spring that is held down by a salt tablet. When water dissolves the salt the spring goes off sending the float to the surface. Your rod is attached to the float by 60 feet of braided line, meaning you can get your rod back in some pretty deep water! I know what you're thinking, because I thought it too. "What if it rains or I dip my rod butt in the water while landing a fish?" The Savur has a pressure sensitive cap that keeps water out unless there is enough pressure to push water past the cap. At 5 feet the device goes off almost instantaneously. At 3 feet and less the device releases the float after just a few minutes. This cap keeps the float from going off before they are supposed to and I can say that I have had mine in some pretty substantial downpours with no problems. I have been told that if they sit inside of a tube rod holder full of water it will eventually set the float off because obviously it can't be completely waterproof, so just be aware of that! And once your float ends up going off, Savur offers easily installed reload kits for less than $10 to get you ready again.
Fit and Installation
The Savur Rod Floats were very easy to install, and as you can see, they fit on rods of most sizes perfectly! When you order the rod floats, they come with the rod float, the epoxy, and the instructions. The tools you will need are a razor blade/utility knife, the epoxy (which comes with a wooden mixing/application tool, alcohol pads, and in some cases, a hack saw. If you're feeling a little intimidated, let me give you some assurance. If I can do this and make it look good, ANYONE can! There are a lot of easy to find videos on how to install one and the instructions that come with it are easy to follow, so you don't have to go it alone.
Final Thoughts:
Full disclosure, I am a member of the Savur Outdoors Pro Staff, but the reason I reached out to them was because of how much I believe in and rely on their products. I, like most fishermen, have a lot of money invested in rods and reels and I certainly do not want to lose any of them! Even if you only have one $25 combo, losing your setup ruins your whole day of fishing and for me, the Savur Outdoors Rod Floats are the best way to prevent that hands down. I tried a couple other rod floats and really didn't like them, and leashes got me tangled up and frustrated. The Savur Outdoors Rod Floats get the highest rating I could give! Give the Savur Rod Floats a try and I am sure you will love them just as much as I do!
